In long-term smokers, chronic irritation of the tissue covering the vocal cords can lead to a condition called <strong>Reinke&#8217;s edema<\/strong> or <strong>polypoid corditis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This condition not only affects voice quality but may also cause <strong>permanent hoarseness<\/strong> and <strong>shortness of breath<\/strong> over time.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Reinke&#8217;s Edema?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Beneath the surface mucosa of the vocal cords lies a thin layer known as \u201cReinke\u2019s space.\u201d Due to the effects of smoking, <strong>clear, gelatinous fluid gradually accumulates<\/strong> in this area, causing the vocal cords to <strong>swell<\/strong>. This condition is called <strong>Reinke\u2019s edema<\/strong>. As the condition progresses, fluid accumulation increases, the mucosal structure deteriorates, and the vocal cords take on a polyp-like appearance. This is also referred to as <strong>polypoid corditis<\/strong>. It is a chronic irritation-based lesion, typically bilateral.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.profdrelifaksoy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Resim1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"869\" height=\"782\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Are the Symptoms?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent and deep hoarseness<\/li>\n<li>More noticeable voice changes in the morning<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue while speaking<\/li>\n<li>Sensation of fullness or irritation in the throat<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath (in advanced cases)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In women who smoke, it is typical for the voice to become deeper and more masculine due to Reinke\u2019s edema. Many complain of being mistaken for a man on the phone.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Endoscopic laryngoscopy<\/strong> allows direct visualization of the vocal cords.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Videolaryngostroboscopy<\/strong> evaluates the vibration of the vocal cords.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>biopsy<\/strong> may be performed if necessary. Reinke\u2019s edema is not cancer and does not turn into cancer.
